Tying An Extreme Range Bag
by Terry Edmonds
Casting to extreme ranges is all well and good put there is a problem, a rig will often go further than what you can put bait out with a spod or throwing stick so its often a situation of single hookbaits only.
What I want to do is to show you a way of fishing at extreme range but with some added attraction and virtually tangle free, buy using PVA bags effectively.
The first thing that we want to do for a bag to fly well is to make sure all the weight is in the front of the bag, we do this buy placing a pear shaped lead into the bag first, pear shaped leads are ideal as they don’t pierce the bag.
Always make sure your lead and bait are completely dry before before putting in the bag.
The bags I use come from a firm called big carp and are made so that the lead just enters the bag making it easy to stop the pellet travelling down infront of the lead which effects the bags casting ability
All bags work better with great bait !!!!!

This shows the set up i use , leadcore helicopter rigs are ideal for this set up along with very short hook links, which suits the feeding situation you will get with small bags.

To ensure that the pellets don’t get infront of the bag lick and stick the corners of the bag tight to the lead this will stop bait items falling down the sides

you can now half fill the bag with pellets the smaller the better 1 to 3 mm are great, mainline produce some great pellets for this in the response range fine groundbait can also be used with some liquid additive that wont melt the bag my favourite is maple 8 or the strawberry jam, the ground bait will really pack down tight

place your hook bait in the bag because of the small food items I use a small balanced hook bait such as 10mm boilies or trimmed down baits actve 8 and maple 8 being favourites on a short braided hook link around 2 –3 inches long then put some more pellets in just covering the hook bait

making sure you have enough bag left twist the top of the bag down and compact the pellets/groundbait inside as tight as you can this is important so spend some time making it as compact and tight as you can.
Tie off with PVA string or tape, then lick the remaining left over bag and twist round the leadcore leader making it very aerodynamic

This is a very effective method of tying a longrange bag and can in some circumstances actually outcast a standard rig give it a try a few of my good friends also use this bag setup with great results at extreme range

The bag is already to cast to the horizon it will fly along way just make sure the lead is in the bottom of the bag i prefer 4 ounce pear leads for my distance bag work
