Dear Spug,
I have been fishing an 8-acre gravel pit for some years now. Last year was the first time I had tried spodding out bait and I must admit my catch rate certainly improved. Could you please suggest a couple of bait items I should try in my spod mix this coming spring to increase my catch rate even further? Please help.
Regards,
Lee Hitchborne, Cambridgeshire.
Hi Lee, and thank you for your question. There is no doubt about it that spodding out big beds of bait can seriously increase your catch rate, especially on densely stocked lakes where the carp are always competing with each other for food. There are three top ingredients I always like to include in my spod mix during the spring months; these are pellets, particles (hemp and sweetcorn) and boilies. The pellets and particles will get the smaller fish in the lake feeding and stirring up the bottom, which in turn will attract the big carp into the swim, which will then hopefully clear up the remaining small items and the boilies from the spod mix and then (hopefully) my boilie hookbait!
Hope this helps you mate.

Spodding pellets will create a feeding frenzy in your swim by attracting both the carp and smaller fish… Very Crafty! |

Hemp and sweetcorn will encourage smaller fish to start stirring up your swim.

A boilie-caught 20. Give the carp plenty of bait for great results in May |
