Question This Answer Is... - APRIL 2007

Dear Roman Buczynski,
The lake I am currently fishing has a ban on leader materials of any kind. Everybody has to use tubing, but because the lakebed is choddy the tubing never quite sits neatly, and I am sure this is costing me bites. I won’t use main line straight through because I have seen this damage these pretty carp in the past. Do you have any suggestions on how I can get around this problem?
P Creasy, Wiltshire.

One major problem with tubing is that it has an inherent semi-stiffness. Some makes are better than others, but they are all quite similar. Putting putty and lead wire along the length of the tubing, or using backleads, can help pin it down, but over debris it never really looks right.

What I’ve been doing is cutting up different lengths of tubing, some khaki-coloured, some brown, and some dark green. By threading these 1ins-3ins bits of tubing down the line, you get a mottled effect that will camouflage really well. Also, this will be incredibly slinky, and supple over a choddy lakebed. Check out the pictures, it’s so much better than a standard bit of tubing.

To create the Supple Tubing Setup, begin by cutting different-sized lengths of coloured tubing.
Thread on the small lengths of tubing, and wrap lead wire or putty along the odd piece.

To stop all the small lengths of tubing sliding up the line, trap them in place with lead wire wrapped around the main line above the tubing.
The multi-coloured lengths of tubing will blend in brilliantly on the lakebed, and sit nicely over debris.
